Tideway is the organisation delivering the Thames Tideway Tunnel, a 25km sewer tunnel urgently required to tackle sewage pollution in the tidal River Thames.
The existing Victorian sewer network was designed to cope with a city of four million people but, with a population of nine million and growing, it is full to capacity. Tunnelling is due to start later this year and, once it is completed around 2023, the ‘super sewer’ will tackle the problem of millions of tonnes of untreated sewage that flow into the Thames each year.
In total the project is expected to create 4,000 direct sustainable jobs. One in every 50 site jobs will be an apprenticeship.
